China’s groundbreaking small modular reactor (SMR), known as Linglong One, has commenced the installation of its digital control system (DCS) in the southern island province of Hainan. This marks a significant milestone in the advancement of nuclear technology within the country.
Linglong One, officially referred to as the ACP100, is the world’s first land-based commercial SMR. Developed domestically by the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), this multi-purpose, small modular pressurized water reactor represents a major achievement in China’s independent innovation following the success of Hualong One, the nation’s third-generation nuclear reactor.
The DCS, often described as the “nerve center” of a nuclear power plant, is critical for monitoring and controlling reactor operations. According to Deng Xiaoliang, deputy general manager of Hainan Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., Linglong One’s DCS utilizes two domestically developed platforms, underscoring China’s commitment to self-reliance in nuclear technology.
With a capacity of 125 megawatts, Linglong One is designed for versatility. Unlike the larger Hualong One, this smaller reactor is intended for urban heating and cooling, industrial steam production, and seawater desalination. Such applications highlight the potential of SMRs in supporting sustainable development and addressing energy needs in diverse settings.
Approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2016, Linglong One represents the forefront of SMR technology on the global stage. Construction of the reactor began in 2021 in Hainan, positioning China as a leader in the deployment of advanced nuclear solutions.
The progress of Linglong One not only demonstrates China’s advancements in nuclear technology but also its dedication to providing innovative energy solutions that can be utilized both domestically and internationally. The successful installation of the DCS brings the reactor one step closer to operational status, promising a new era of efficient and adaptable nuclear energy.
