China Drills to Record Depth with Fushenre-1 Geothermal Well

China is set to break new ground in geothermal energy exploration as its first ultra-deep geothermal scientific exploration well, Fushenre-1, is poised to reach a depth of 5,200 meters. Anticipated to set a national record for the deepest geothermal well, this milestone is expected to be achieved on Monday, according to China Media Group.

The Fushenre-1 well, located in Haikou city in south China’s island province of Hainan, marks a significant step in China’s pursuit of sustainable energy resources. The drilling project is led by Sinopec, one of the country’s largest oil refining and petrochemical enterprises, and commenced in September of last year.

Haikou sits atop one of the world’s four major high-temperature geothermal belts along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Characterized by intense volcanic activity, the region is rich in deep geothermal resources. Historically, China’s geothermal development has focused on shallow resources. The Fushenre-1 well represents the country’s first venture into exploring high-temperature geothermal energy at such profound depths.

Tackling the challenges posed by extreme temperatures and abrasive geological formations, the exploration team has employed advanced technologies. “Dual-drive drilling and high-pressure jetting” techniques have been utilized to enhance drilling efficiency. Integrated composite impact accelerators have increased drilling speeds, while reinforced plugging methods have been implemented to prevent collapse and leakage. High-temperature-resistant instruments and tools are being used to withstand the harsh conditions of the deep subsurface environment.

Environmental considerations have also been at the forefront of the project. Measures have been taken to prevent drilling pipe sticking and leakage, ensuring that the drilling process remains free from pollution such as noise and rock debris. These efforts align with China’s broader commitment to developing clean energy sources while minimizing environmental impact.

The successful completion of the Fushenre-1 well not only sets a new record for geothermal exploration in China but also paves the way for the utilization of deep geothermal resources. As the country seeks to diversify its energy portfolio and reduce carbon emissions, projects like Fushenre-1 highlight the potential of geothermal energy as a sustainable and reliable power source.
