Beijing and Brasilia have taken a significant step towards a greener future, as China and Brazil signed a 30-year franchise agreement on Wednesday for the Brazil Northeast Ultra-High-Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) power transmission line project. The landmark deal, sealed in the Brazilian capital of Brasília, is set to transform the energy landscape of South America’s largest nation by 2029.
This ambitious project aims to harness and deliver clean energy—wind, solar, and hydropower—from Brazil’s resource-rich northeastern and northern regions to the central areas of the country. By transmitting sustainable energy across a vast distance of over 1,468 kilometers, the initiative supports Brazil’s commitment to clean and low-carbon energy transformation.
China’s State Grid Corporation secured the project last December, marking its third major venture in Brazil’s energy sector following previous successes with the Belo Monte UHVDC transmission project. The latest endeavor represents the largest infrastructure power transmission auction ever held in Brazil, underscoring the deepening cooperation between the two nations in the field of renewable energy.
The project involves constructing an 800kV DC transmission line capable of delivering 5 million kilowatts of clean power. This energy will flow from wind and solar farms in the northeast to key regions in the southeast, including the bustling metropolitan area of Brasília. The transmission line is expected to meet the electricity needs of over 12 million people, significantly boosting energy reliability and accessibility in these regions.
Beyond addressing energy demands, the project aligns with Brazil’s green development goals by ensuring the seamless flow of renewable energy from areas experiencing a boom in wind and solar power plants.
