In a significant gesture of solidarity, the Chinese Embassy in Zambia has donated over $500,000 to support Zambia’s ongoing fight against a devastating cholera outbreak.
The funds, part of the cholera assistance measures announced earlier this year, were officially handed over during a ceremony attended by Wang Sheng, Charge d’Affaires at the Chinese Embassy, and Zambia’s Minister of Finance and National Planning, Situmbeko Musokotwane.
“While we are delighted to see that the cholera outbreak in Zambia has been alleviated, its eradication remains a long-term task,” Wang Sheng remarked. “This contribution aims to improve sanitation and water supply, helping to prevent future outbreaks.”
Since October of the previous year, Zambia has grappled with a severe cholera epidemic, with over 20,000 reported cases and more than 700 fatalities. The financial support from China is expected to bolster the nation’s efforts to combat the disease and enhance public health infrastructure.
Minister Musokotwane expressed profound gratitude for China’s assistance. “Our success in controlling the cholera outbreak is attributed not only to our resolve and commitment but also to the invaluable support from partners like China,” he stated.
In addition to the financial aid, Wang Sheng revealed that a Chinese vaccine manufacturer is exploring the possibility of producing vaccines within Zambia. This initiative, requested by the Zambian government, seeks to establish a long-term solution to prevent large-scale cholera outbreaks in the future.
China’s support extends beyond health crises. Wang Sheng affirmed that the Chinese government and people will continue to offer assistance as Zambia faces challenges from prolonged droughts threatening food security and electricity supply.
Minister Musokotwane also acknowledged China’s consistent support in Zambia’s debt restructuring process, highlighting the strengthening ties between the two nations.
The donation underscores the deepening partnership between China and Zambia, reflecting a shared commitment to overcoming health crises and fostering sustainable development.
