The China Consumers Association has issued a warning to Chinese consumers to cease consumption of certain Japanese health supplements containing red yeast rice, following reports of severe health risks associated with these products.
The association confirmed that while these supplements were not officially imported for sale in China, they are accessible through cross-border e-commerce platforms and overseas retail outlets. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to discontinue use immediately.

Japanese pharmaceutical company Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. recently disclosed that its supplements containing “beni-koji,” or red yeast rice, have been linked to several deaths and over 100 hospitalizations. The company announced a voluntary recall of three products containing the ingredient after acknowledging the serious health implications.
The China Consumers Association advised affected consumers to contact Kobayashi Pharmaceutical’s customer service in China for assistance. Those who purchased the supplements through import e-commerce platforms are encouraged to apply for returns and refunds. Additionally, the association recommended that consumers monitor their health closely and seek medical attention if necessary.
Delayed Disclosure Sparks Criticism
Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, based in Osaka, has faced significant criticism for not promptly informing the public about the health risks. According to reports from the Associated Press, the company was aware of the issues as early as January but did not make a public announcement until March 22.
Japanese physician Eiji Kusumi commented on the delay, suggesting that economic interests may have influenced the company’s decision to withhold information. “They should have disclosed the information as soon as possible,” Kusumi stated. “Immediate disclosure could have prevented more people from suffering kidney conditions and health issues. But the company might have been concerned about the impact on its brand and economic interests.”
Impact on Public Trust and Health Food Industry
Kusumi noted that rebuilding public trust in Kobayashi Pharmaceutical will be a challenging endeavor. He emphasized that the scandal delivers a significant blow to the health food industry, potentially undermining consumer confidence in functional foods.
He also highlighted the misleading nature of labeling supplements as “functional food,” which may lead consumers to believe the products have been reviewed and certified by health authorities. In Japan, function-labeled foods do not require official approval, and companies may label their products based on their own reputation.
“The company claimed that the red yeast rice extract could help lower cholesterol, but there’s no scientific verification that this actually works,” Kusumi explained. “From a physician’s point of view, it’s not appropriate.”
