Two more individuals have died after consuming a dietary supplement produced by Japanese pharmaceutical company Kobayashi Pharma, bringing the total number of deaths to four. The supplement, known as “beni-koji choleste help,” is marketed as a granule for lowering cholesterol.
Kobayashi Pharma confirmed the latest fatalities on Wednesday after being contacted by the families of the deceased. One individual had shown signs of kidney disease prior to their death, while the other had been consuming the product since 2021.
Increasing Hospitalizations and Public Anxiety
Japan’s Ministry of Health reported that 93 people have been hospitalized after taking the supplement. In addition, Kobayashi Pharma’s helpline has received over 12,000 inquiries regarding health concerns related to the product as of Wednesday.
This incident marks the first time a manufacturer has publicly linked a functional food product to deaths and initiated a voluntary recall since the system’s introduction in 2015. In response to the crisis, the Osaka city government has issued recall orders for three yeast-fermented rice products, including beni-koji choleste help. Disposal orders based on the Food Sanitation Act are expected to follow, and products linked to the incident are being removed from store shelves nationwide.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has called for a thorough investigation, stating, “We need to determine the cause and consider necessary responses.” The government is launching an emergency inspection campaign targeting over 6,000 functional food products to prevent similar incidents.
