China Surpasses 850 Million 5G Users, Reports MIIT

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has announced that the nation has surpassed 850 million 5G users as of the end of February. The country’s largest wireless carriers—China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Broadnet—collectively serve a total of 1.746 billion mobile phone users, according to a report by China Media Group.

The surge in 5G adoption underscores China’s rapid advancement in telecommunications technology. Over the past 12 months, cumulative mobile internet traffic reached 48.76 billion gigabytes, marking a 16.6 percent year-on-year increase. This significant growth highlights the expanding demand for high-speed connectivity and digital services across the nation.

The telecommunications industry remained stable in January and February, maintaining double-digit growth in the total volume of business. China’s three main telecommunications enterprises recorded a cumulative business income of 292.3 billion yuan (about $40.5 billion) during this period, reflecting a 4.3 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Emerging businesses such as cloud computing and big data have also seen substantial growth. Revenue from these sectors reached 75.76 billion yuan, accounting for 25.9 percent of the total telecommunications revenue—a year-on-year increase of 11.3 percent. This trend indicates a shift towards digital transformation and the increasing importance of innovative technologies in China’s economic landscape.
