Saviola Backs Argentina, Hails Yamal as Next Global Star Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Argentinian football legend Javier Saviola ignited enthusiasm among Chinese fans during a recent visit to Beijing's Workers' Stadium, sharing exclusive insights about the 2026 FIFA World Cup in an interview with Sports Scene's Mike Fox. The former Barcelona and Real Madrid striker, who represented Argentina at the 2006 World Cup, highlighted the enduring significance of football's premier tournament.

"Playing in a World Cup remains the pinnacle for any player," said Saviola, now 44. Reflecting on Argentina's current status as defending champions, he added: "I’m proud to see Argentina at the highest level again. We’re hopeful for another strong showing this year."

Saviola drew parallels between Barcelona’s 16-year-old prodigy Lamine Yamal and a young Lionel Messi, stating: "Yamal embodies the new generation of talent. Like Messi did for us, he’ll carry the responsibility of leading his country while shaping his legacy." He predicted Yamal could become "one of the world’s best players within years."

When assessing contenders for the 48-team tournament across North America, Saviola acknowledged traditional powerhouses like France and Spain but affirmed: "Argentinians believe fiercely in our team’s ability to defend the title." His lighthearted response to England’s chances – "They’re always a contender" – drew laughter during the exchange.
