Kimi Antonelli Dominates Japanese GP, Extends F1 Lead with Mercedes

Mercedes prodigy Kimi Antonelli cemented his status as Formula 1's rising star with a commanding victory at Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix, marking his second consecutive win in as many weeks. The 19-year-old Italian crossed the Suzuka finish line 4.2 seconds ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc completed the podium in third.

Antonelli's triumph follows his historic Shanghai victory two weeks ago, where he became the second-youngest race winner in F1 history. With 72 championship points, he now leads the 2026 season standings by 18 points. "We're building momentum at the right time," Antonelli told reporters post-race. "The team gave me a rocket ship today."

Ferrari showed renewed competitiveness with Lewis Hamilton securing sixth place, building on his Chinese GP podium finish. The seven-time champion's improved performance signals progress for the Scuderia after a challenging 2025 season.

Red Bull's struggles continued as Max Verstappen finished eighth, marking the four-time champion's third consecutive race without a podium. The Dutch driver now sits fifth in the standings, 49 points behind Antonelli.

The F1 calendar now enters a five-week hiatus following cancellations of April's Middle Eastern races. Teams will regroup before the Miami Grand Prix on May 3, where Antonelli aims to extend his championship lead under Florida's coastal lights.
