Zhang Zhanshuo Claims Fourth Gold at China Open Swimming Championships

Chinese swimmer Zhang Zhanshuo cemented his status as a rising star in aquatic sports by securing his fourth individual gold medal at the 2026 China Open Swimming Championships in Shenzhen on Sunday, March 22. The 800-meter freestyle victory capped a dominant performance that saw him outpace Germany's Lukas Märtens with a personal best time of 7:44.45.

In a race that kept spectators on edge, Märtens initially led for the first 450 meters before Zhang executed a strategic surge during the final stretch. This triumph follows his earlier 400-meter freestyle win against the same opponent at the Universiade Center, further solidifying his reputation in long-distance events.

While Zhang dominated the headlines, other athletes made waves in Sunday's finals. Veteran Chinese swimmer Wang Shun showed remarkable form after an extended break, finishing second in the 200-meter individual medley behind Australia's William Petric. American world record holder Regan Smith continued her backstroke mastery with another sub-58-second finish in the women's 100-meter event.

The women's 200-meter individual medley provided one of the day's closest finishes, with Yu Zidi edging out compatriot Yu Yiting by just 0.08 seconds. These performances underscore the global competitiveness of the China Open, which has become a key indicator of form ahead of major international competitions this year.
