CAF Vows Impartiality in Senegal’s AFCON Appeal, Denies Bias Allegations

Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe reaffirmed the organization's commitment to fairness on March 19, 2026, as Senegal prepares to challenge CAF's decision to strip the nation of its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title. The move follows a controversial final where Senegal's team abandoned the match over a disputed penalty call during stoppage time.

Motsepe emphasized CAF's respect for due process, stating: "We will adhere to and respect the decision taken at the highest level. No country in Africa will receive preferential treatment." His remarks come amid mounting pressure from Dakar, where authorities have demanded an investigation into alleged corruption within CAF's decision-making process.

The dispute centers on conflicting rulings within CAF's judicial structure. While the Disciplinary Board initially upheld Morocco's victory, the Appeals Board later acknowledged procedural irregularities – a contradiction Motsepe framed as evidence of independent oversight. "This shows we've made progress in establishing transparent systems since I assumed leadership," he noted, referencing reforms that include appointing respected legal professionals to CAF's judicial bodies.

Sports analysts suggest the outcome could reshape African football governance. As CAS prepares to hear Senegal's appeal this month, stakeholders await a resolution that balances competitive integrity with administrative accountability.
