Chinese athletes Cai Jaiyun and Yu Shuang delivered historic performances at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Paralympics on Friday, securing gold medals in both the men's and women's biathlon finals during the event's closing day.
Cai Jaiyun claimed his third gold medal of this year's Games with a dramatic victory in the men's sprint pursuit standing final. The 28-year-old demonstrated exceptional marksmanship by hitting all targets during the 4-kilometer race, overtaking Ukraine's Grygoriy Vovchynskyi in a photo-finish sprint that decided the race by 0.2 seconds.
This achievement elevates Cai's career Winter Paralympics medal count to six, including two silver and one bronze from cross-country skiing at Beijing 2022. Remarkably, the 2026 Games mark his competitive biathlon debut, with gold medals secured in all three of his events.
Yu Shuang complemented China's strong showing by winning the women's event, continuing the nation's upward trajectory in winter Paralympic sports following its successful hosting of the 2022 Games.
