Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics Kick Off with Spectacular Verona Ceremony

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics launched on March 6 with a vibrant celebration of resilience and diversity at Verona's historic Arena, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marking 50 years since the inaugural Winter Paralympics in 1976, this year's edition features a record-breaking Chinese delegation of 70 athletes competing across six sports.

Under the theme "Life in Motion," the opening ceremony blended cutting-edge video design with a modern reinterpretation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, symbolizing unity through a dance performance about love transcending barriers. Italian President Sergio Mattarella officially declared the Games open following a speech by organizing committee president Giovanni Malagò.

Notably, this year's Paralympics adopt an innovative distributed format, with live-streamed athlete participation from multiple competition clusters. The Chinese team, representing the country's largest overseas Winter Paralympic delegation to date, will compete in 71 events including para Alpine skiing and wheelchair curling.

With 79 medal events scheduled through March 15, the Games highlight both athletic excellence and technological innovation in accessibility. The return of the Paralympics to Italy after 20 years underscores growing global interest in adaptive sports, particularly across Asian markets where winter sports participation has surged since Beijing 2022.
