Wu Yibing Exits ATP Mexican Open in Quarterfinals Despite Valiant Effort

Chinese tennis player Wu Yibing's impressive run at the ATP Mexican Open ended in the quarterfinals on February 27, 2026, after a hard-fought battle against Italy's fifth-seeded Flavio Cobolli. The world No. 142, who entered the tournament as a qualifier, fell 6-7(4), 1-6 in a match that showcased both his potential and the challenges of competing against top-tier opponents.

The first set saw Wu push Cobolli to the limit during a 73-minute marathon, saving five break points and earning two set points before narrowly losing the tiebreak. The second set proved less competitive, with the Italian capitalizing on Wu's unforced errors to secure victory.

Despite the loss, Wu achieved a career milestone by reaching his first ATP 500 quarterfinal—a significant step forward for the 26-year-old Hangzhou native. His path to the last eight included a stunning straight-sets victory over world No. 8 Casper Ruud, marking only his third career win against a Top 20 player.

Wu's performance in Acapulco demonstrates continued progress since his breakthrough 2025 season, which saw him reach quarterfinals in Geneva and his hometown Hangzhou event. While consistency against elite competition remains a challenge, his ability to qualify for and compete in high-level tournaments signals growing maturity in his game.
