Haiti Makes Winter Olympics History with Cross-Country Skiing Debut

In a historic moment at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Stevenson Savart has become Haiti's first-ever cross-country skier to compete at the Games. The Caribbean nation, better known for its tropical climate than winter sports, is celebrating Savart's participation as a triumph of determination.

"This is my childhood dream coming true," Savart told reporters in Predazzo, Italy, where the cross-country events are being held. "I want to show young athletes everywhere that barriers are meant to be broken."

Haiti's Olympic Committee confirmed that Savart and one other athlete represent the country's largest Winter Games delegation to date. While medal contention remains unlikely, officials emphasize the symbolic importance of their presence amid global efforts to diversify winter sports.

The 28-year-old skier trained extensively in Europe and North America to qualify, often practicing on artificial snow given Haiti's lack of winter infrastructure. His journey has drawn attention to climate challenges facing small nations developing cold-weather athletics programs.

As the Games continue through February, Savart's story resonates particularly with diaspora communities and developing nations seeking greater representation in international sports. CGTN's Dan Williams noted during an interview: "This isn't just about skiing—it's about rewriting what's possible."
