China’s Sun Long Secures Silver in Thrilling Milano Cortina 1000m Final

Chinese short track speed skater Sun Long made history on February 13, 2026, claiming silver in the men's 1,000m event at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. The 25-year-old crossed the line in 1:24.565 – a mere 0.028 seconds behind Dutch champion Jens van't Wout – in one of the closest finishes in Olympic short track history.

The Republic of Korea's Rim Jong-un took bronze with 1:24.611, completing an Asian-dominated podium that saw two of the three medals go to regional athletes. Sun's achievement comes just days after a disappointing fourth-place finish in the mixed team relay, where an error by the skater proved costly.

"This medal represents years of sacrifice," Sun told reporters after the race. "While gold would have been perfect, standing on this podium shows our team's resilience." The result marks China's third short track medal of the 2026 Games and strengthens Asia's position as a powerhouse in winter sports.
