Mexican Skier Allan Corona Breaks Barriers Ahead of Milano Cortina 2026

In an inspiring underdog story, Mexican cross-country skier Allan Corona is challenging norms at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina. The 34-year-old athlete, who will turn 35 next Monday, represents one of only five Winter Olympians from Mexico this year – a nation better known for its beach resorts than snow sports.

Corona’s journey began just six years ago when he moved to Europe and discovered cross-country skiing while adapting to his new environment. "I want to show people that you can start from zero anywhere else," he told CGTN, reflecting on his rapid ascent in a sport dominated by athletes from Nordic countries.

Despite Mexico’s limited winter sports infrastructure, Corona’s achievements have sparked national pride. He recently received recognition at Mexico’s National Palace – an honor he never anticipated through skiing. "The support has definitely been fueling these last months," he said, acknowledging the growing interest in winter sports back home.

Looking beyond personal glory, Corona envisions his participation as the first step toward building Mexico’s winter sports legacy. "Our goal is, in four and eight years, bringing a way bigger delegation," he stated, emphasizing the importance of laying foundations for future athletes.
