Algeria Fined $100K, Players Suspended After AFCON 2025 Misconduct

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a $100,000 fine on Algeria’s football federation and suspended two players following violent incidents during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final against Nigeria earlier this month. The sanctions come after clashes involving players, officials, and supporters erupted following Nigeria’s 2-0 victory on January 10.

Goalkeeper Luca Zidane received a two-match ban, while defender Rafik Belghali was suspended for four matches, with both penalties applying to qualifiers for the 2027 AFCON. CAF cited security lapses at the stadium and condemned supporters’ attempts to invade the pitch and wave banknotes at referees.

The Algerian Football Federation confirmed it will appeal the decision, calling the punishments “disproportionate.” The ruling highlights ongoing challenges in managing post-match tensions during high-stakes tournaments.
