Algeria Apologizes for Amoura’s AFCON 2025 Gesture, Seeks to Mend Ties

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has formally apologized to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following a contentious gesture by forward Mohamed Amoura during their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 Round of 16 match in Morocco. The incident occurred after Algeria's 1–0 victory, when Amoura appeared to mimic the iconic pose of Congolese superfan Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, a tribute to independence leader Patrice Lumumba.

Amoura later clarified on Instagram that his actions were emotionally charged and unintentionally disrespectful, stating: "I was unaware of the deeper significance of the fan's pose. I apologize to Congolese fans." The FAF reinforced this sentiment by dispatching a delegation to meet Congolese supporters in Rabat, presenting Mboladinga with an Algerian jersey bearing his nickname, "Lumumba VEA."

DRC Sports Minister Didier Budimbu attended the reconciliation effort, which emphasized the nations' historical friendship. Analysts suggest the swift resolution reflects the growing role of sports diplomacy in addressing cultural sensitivities across Africa.
