Macao SAR is harnessing the momentum of the 15th National Games to accelerate sports development and public wellness initiatives, according to Sports Bureau Director Chao Kuok Wai. In an exclusive interview this week, Chao outlined ambitious plans to build on the region's historic participation in the Games, which concluded earlier this year.
As a co-host alongside Guangdong and Hong Kong SAR, Macao fielded its largest-ever delegation of over 600 members, including 400 athletes competing across 23 sports. "This reflects our commitment to elevating competitive sports while fostering mass participation," Chao told CGTN Sports Scene. The SAR organized 100 public fitness events in 2025—a 64% increase from 2024—and offered free access to all public sports facilities during the Games.
Looking ahead, Chao revealed plans to upgrade infrastructure and host more international events, including an annual dragon boat invitational tournament. The bureau currently supports 57 sports associations preserving disciplines from martial arts to football through five financial aid programs. A youth wushu school established with the Wushu Association exemplifies efforts to sustain cultural heritage while nurturing new talent.
"Our goal is to make sports a cornerstone of community life," Chao emphasized, noting that temporary venues built for the Games will be repurposed for public use. With these strategies, Macao aims to cement its status as a regional sports hub while promoting active lifestyles among its residents.
