Setien Exits Beijing Guoan Amid Final-Stage CSL Title Race

Beijing Guoan announced on Sunday that head coach Quique Setien has resigned with four matches remaining in the Chinese Super League (CSL) season, citing personal and family reasons. The club expressed gratitude for the Spaniard’s contributions, which included a strong first half of the season that saw Guoan briefly lead the league table.

Setien, 67, took charge in December 2024 and oversaw 32 matches across all competitions, securing 19 wins. Despite early promise, Guoan’s title hopes faded in recent weeks, with inconsistent performances leaving them fourth in the CSL standings. Defending champions Shanghai Port lead with 57 points, while Chengdu Rongcheng and Shanghai Shenhua occupy second and third, respectively.

His tenure ended with a 3-0 loss to Australia’s Macarthur in the AFC Champions League 2 last week. The former Barcelona and Real Betis manager, known for his tactical acumen in Spain, now departs as Guoan aims to secure Asian competition qualification in the season’s final stretch.
