Messi’s MLS All-Star Participation in Doubt Ahead of Liga MX Clash

Uncertainty surrounds Lionel Messi's participation in the 2025 MLS All-Star Game as the Inter Miami star missed Monday's training session in Austin, Texas. The absence of the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and teammate Jordi Alba cast doubt on their availability for Wednesday's exhibition match against Liga MX All-Stars.

MLS All-Star coach Nico Estevez expressed cautious optimism about Messi's potential involvement: "Having the best player in history is something very important for everyone. I hope he can be here." League rules mandate a one-match suspension for any player skipping the event without valid injury justification, potentially affecting Miami's weekend clash with Cincinnati.

The event marks MLS's 29th All-Star Game during its 30th anniversary season, featuring 14 international players among its 30-member roster. Nashville's English striker Sam Surridge, currently tied with Messi for the league scoring lead (18 goals), told reporters: "Training was brilliant – getting to know some of the lads creates unique chemistry before we return to business this weekend."

Liga MX seeks to extend its dominance after last year's 4-1 victory, with 2024 MVP Juan Brunetta returning for the Mexican league's All-Stars. The cross-border rivalry continues to grow as MLS celebrates three decades of North American soccer development.
