Chinese Skater Han Cong Vies for IOC Athletes’ Commission Role

Chinese figure skater Han Cong, a two-time Olympic medalist, has been named among 11 global athletes campaigning for seats on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes' Commission. The announcement comes as Han prepares to return to competitive skating next season with partner Sui Wenjing after their gold medal triumph at Beijing 2022.

The IOC revealed Thursday that candidates from 11 National Olympic Committees across five winter sports will compete for two positions on the influential commission. Voting for the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games athletes' delegation opens January 30, 2026, with results announced February 19.

Han's candidacy highlights China's growing influence in winter sports governance. Elected members will serve eight-year terms, helping shape athlete-focused policies across Olympic disciplines. The election outcome could strengthen Asia's representation in Olympic decision-making as the region prepares for future Games.

Successful candidates must secure votes from athletes across at least two different sports, ensuring diverse perspectives on the commission. Current members from Finland and Norway will conclude their terms during the 2026 Games.
