Michek & Zhu-Chen Triumph in Taklimakan Rally’s Brutal SS5 Stage

The 2025 Taklimakan Rally’s fifth stage transformed the desert into a theater of human resilience as competitors faced 287 kilometers of searing heat and unpredictable terrain. Czech rider Martin Michek and Chinese car team Zhu Guanghai-Chen Qingkai emerged as icons of perseverance, dominating their categories in one of the world’s most extreme motorsport events.

Motorcycle division leader Michek, racing for Chongqing Hoto Factory Team, silenced doubts about his recovery from earlier injuries with a blistering 3:38:25 finish. “Every dune felt like climbing a mountain,” the rally veteran later remarked, his performance proving that experience trumps adversity in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region’s harsh environment.

In the car category, Duonai Shock Absorber Team’s Zhu and navigator Chen mastered the stage in 3:22:40, their vehicle surviving violent jolts across drop-offs that claimed several competitors. The duo’s synchronized navigation through zero-visibility sand clouds highlighted China’s growing prowess in endurance racing.

As teams prepare for Tuesday’s 288-kilometer SS6 – featuring wetlands and Gobi stretches – analysts note the rally’s dual significance: a technical proving ground for automotive innovation and a barometer of Asia’s expanding adventure tourism sector.
