China’s Olympic legacy continues to shape its sports leadership as diving legend Zhou Jihong was elected president of the Chinese Swimming Association (CSA) on Tuesday. The historic appointment occurred during the association’s Sixth Congress of Members in Beijing, signaling renewed momentum for aquatic sports development.
Zhou, who secured China’s first-ever Olympic diving gold in the women’s 10-meter platform at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, outlined an ambitious roadmap during her acceptance speech. She emphasized aligning CSA initiatives with China’s national strategy to become a global sports power by 2035.
"We will strengthen competitive sports while fostering youth participation and nationwide fitness programs," Zhou stated, highlighting a three-pronged approach to elevate swimming and diving disciplines. Her leadership team includes eight vice presidents, with Huang Wei assuming dual roles as vice president and secretary-general.
The election comes as China prepares for upcoming international competitions, including the Paris 2024 Olympics. Analysts suggest Zhou’s competitive experience and administrative background – including previous roles in diving program management – position her to drive technical innovation and talent identification systems.
