Shenhua Takes on Revamped Yatai in Exciting CSL Season Opener

The 2025 Chinese Super League season is set to ignite with intrigue as Shanghai Shenhua, fresh off Tuesday's 4-2 AFC Champions League Elite victory against Japan's Vissel Kobe, host the transformed Changchun Yatai in a clash pitting youthful ambition against tactical reinvention.

Boasting the CSL's youngest squad, Shenhua's title aspirations may rest on teen prodigy Liu Chengyu. The 18-year-old striker anchors a refreshed attack following the departure of Cephas Malele, supported by incoming Brazilian forward Saulo and veteran midfield conductor Joao Teixeira. Coach Leonid Slutskiy, whose side fell one point short of the league title in 2024, is emphasizing urgency.

\"We have to try to show our best level,\" the 54-year-old Russian said while looking forward to the match.

Changchun Yatai heads into kickoff boasting several new signings, including towering Norwegian striker Ohi Omoijuanfo and French playmaker Wylan Cyprien. They have also been busy in the domestic market, picking up Li Shenyuan, Piao Taoyu, Xu Yu, and Sun Qinhan.

Coach Xie Hui, a Shenhua icon, acknowledged the emotional stakes.

\"I think this is a match that is really worth paying attention to, and we should perform better, as Shenhua is my former club,\" he said. \"This is also a bit of motivation, but in terms of the game, I want to get the best result.\"

The northeast club's merciless early schedule features a trip to reigning champions Shanghai Port next week.
