Mark Selby Triumphs Over Stephen Maguire to Secure Second Welsh Open Title

Mark Selby of England defeated Stephen Maguire of Scotland 9-6 in the Welsh Open final at Venue Cymru in Llandudno, Wales, on Sunday, winning his second title of the tournament.

The last time Selby lifted the Welsh Open trophy was in 2008. Seventeen years later, the 41-year-old veteran finished the final without trailing even once. Maguire fought with remarkable resilience and leveled the battle four times.

The two were tied 6-6 after 12 frames. From the 13th round, Selby began to take control of the competition and clinched three straight frames to seal the deal.

\"Obviously I'm delighted,\" he said. \"It's great to see Stephen back in finals, four years is way too long, he's a class act and I'm one of his biggest fans. This week I won a lot of key frames when I've been 40 or 50 points behind, that's been the difference.\"

Having won the British Open in September 2024, Selby became just the ninth player to win multiple Welsh Open titles.

\"I had a good week, I've enjoyed myself, and I have just come up short in the end,\" Maguire said. \"There's nothing you can do when he's potting all the balls, all credit to Mark.\"
