Manchester United Suffer 3-1 Defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford

Manchester United endured a disappointing 3-1 loss at home against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday. Visiting winger Yankuba Minteh was instrumental in Brighton’s victory, scoring one goal and assisting another. The hosts were further hampered by a costly error from goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Brighton’s win propels them to ninth place in the league with 34 points, while Manchester United slips to 13th with 26 points, marking a challenging phase for the Red Devils this season.

“Another loss at home. It’s not acceptable, the way we conceded the goals,” Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim expressed in frustration. “We can play some football, but in small spaces of time. It’s not consistent, and we get nervous, and then we concede a goal.”

The defeat continues a troubling trend for United, as Brighton have now won six of their last seven league encounters against them, including victories in their last three visits to Old Trafford.

Before the match, both teams paid tribute to Manchester United legend Denis Law, who passed away this week. Bagpipes led the teams onto the pitch, and former manager Alex Ferguson laid a wreath at the center circle in his memory.

Brighton took an early lead just five minutes into the game. Kaoru Mitoma beat the offside trap on the left flank after receiving a long ball from Carlos Baleba. His precise pass across the goal found an unmarked Minteh, who made no mistake in finishing.

Manchester United leveled the score midway through the first half. When Brighton attempted to play out from the back, goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen’s misplaced pass fell to Joshua Zirkzee in the box. Baleba’s foul on Zirkzee resulted in a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes confidently converted to make it 1-1.

Brighton thought they had regained the lead early in the second half when Pedro found the net, but a VAR review ruled out the goal due to a foul in the buildup.

The visitors eventually secured their second goal on the hour mark. Mitoma stretched to reach Minteh’s inviting cross, nudging the ball past United defender Noussair Mazraoui to put Brighton ahead.

Brighton sealed the victory with a third goal, capitalizing on a severe error by Onana, leaving Manchester United to reflect on their tenth league defeat of the campaign\u2014the earliest they’ve reached double figures in losses since the 1989-90 season.
