Liverpool’s star forward Mohamed Salah has expressed uncertainty over his future at Anfield, revealing that contract negotiations with the club are “far away from any progress.” With his current deal set to expire this summer, the 32-year-old Egyptian international is focusing on making the most of what could be his final season with the Reds.
“I refuse to be concerned or stressed,” Salah said in a recent interview. “We are far away from any progress, so we just need to wait and see. The thing in my head is, ‘Okay, if it’s my last six months or last year, what do you want to see in the future? Do you want to look back and say I was concerned about the contract or I was stressed, or do you just want to say, okay, I had an unbelievable season.’ That’s in my head now. All the time now.”
Salah leads the Premier League this season with 17 goals and 13 assists, showcasing his continued importance to Liverpool’s attacking prowess. During his seven-and-a-half years at Anfield, he has secured every major club honor except the UEFA Europa League title. Despite the uncertainty, Salah remains committed to helping Liverpool pursue a record-equalling 20th top-flight title.
“If I feel that kind of distraction, I remind myself, ‘You want to look back and you had an unbelievable season.’ So that’s what I want to do,” Salah added. “In my interviews over the last seven or eight years, I always say I want to win the Champions League, but this is the first time I’m saying I really want to win the Premier League with Liverpool.”
The desire to lift the Premier League trophy again is fueled by the team’s inability to celebrate their previous league triumph in 2020 due to coronavirus restrictions. “It’s probably because we didn’t celebrate the one we won in the way we wanted, and also coming back here too, it’s my last year in the club, so you want to do something special for the city,” he explained.
Salah’s uncertain contract situation mirrors that of teammates Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, both of whom are also nearing the end of their current deals. With his agent now eligible to discuss pre-contract agreements with other clubs, speculation about Salah’s next move is mounting. However, the Egypt captain remains focused on the present.
“I just want to enjoy every moment and give everything I have on the pitch,” Salah said. “Whatever happens next, happens.”
