Mbappe’s Return to Form Propels Real Madrid Over Sevilla
Kylian Mbappe showcased a stellar performance as Real Madrid secured a 4-2 victory against Sevilla on Saturday, climbing to second place in La Liga above rivals Barcelona.
Following Atletico Madrid’s triumph over Barcelona earlier in the day to claim the top spot at Christmas, Carlo Ancelotti’s side capitalized on the opportunity with a convincing home win, placing them just one point behind the leaders.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti had expressed confidence in Mbappe prior to Sevilla’s visit, stating that the French forward’s adaptation period after his summer move from Paris Saint-Germain was over. Mbappe validated his coach’s faith, delivering a strong performance and netting his 14th goal of the season across all competitions.
“I know I’ve got much more in my legs than I’m showing, but in the last games I’ve played better,” Mbappe said after the match. “The Bilbao game was good for me; I hit the bottom, I missed a penalty, and it was a moment to realize that I have to give everything for this shirt and show my personality.”
Midfielder Fede Valverde opened the scoring with a brilliant long-range effort, while Rodrygo Goes and Brahim Diaz also found the net for the hosts. Diaz’s goal was set up by an ingenious pass from Mbappe, highlighting the Frenchman’s influence on the game.
Sevilla’s Isaac Romero and Dodi Lukebakio managed to score, but their efforts were not enough to overcome a dominant Real Madrid. The match also marked the final appearance for veteran defender Jesus Navas, who bid an emotional farewell to the club after years of dedicated service.
The victory propels Real Madrid above Barcelona in the league standings, intensifying the race for the La Liga title as the season progresses.
