China celebrated a historic triumph at the World Breaking Championships in Chengdu on Saturday, marking its best-ever performance with two remarkable medals. The event saw Liu Qingyi, known in the breaking community as B-Girl 671, clinch silver in the women’s category, while Wang Ruimiao, or B-Boy Monkey Z, secured bronze in the men’s division.
This year’s championships attracted over 180 talented athletes from 31 nations and regions, gathering in the vibrant capital of Sichuan Province. It was the first world championship since breaking made its Olympic debut at Paris 2024, adding a new level of prestige and competition to the event. Winners and runners-up in both men’s and women’s categories earned direct entry into the 2025 World Games.
Liu Qingyi dazzled the judges with her innovative moves, defeating Lithuania’s Dominika Banevich 2-1 in a thrilling semifinal. This victory was particularly sweet as it avenged her previous defeat in the Olympic semifinals. In the final, Liu introduced several fresh elements against India’s Dewi Sardjoe from the Netherlands. Despite her efforts, Sardjoe edged out Liu with a 2-1 victory to claim the gold.
“My main goal in this competition was to dance joyfully and explore areas outside my comfort zone,” Liu shared after her performance. “Dance is an art form, and I want to express myself through various styles rather than relying on just one way to win.”
On the men’s side, Wang Ruimiao made an impressive debut. The 19-year-old B-Boy advanced through the rounds, ultimately securing the bronze medal after defeating Ukraine’s Oleg Kuznietsov 3-0. Wang’s achievement marks China’s first-ever medal in the men’s division at the World Breaking Championships. The gold was claimed by Japan’s Isshin Hishikawa.
The success of Liu and Wang signifies a significant milestone for China’s breaking scene, showcasing the nation’s growing talent in this dynamic and expressive sport. Their performances not only inspire aspiring dancers across Asia but also highlight the region’s influential role in the global breaking community.
