China’s Shang Juncheng Suffers Second Loss at Next Gen ATP Finals

China’s emerging tennis talent, Shang Juncheng, faced his second straight defeat at the Next Gen ATP Finals, losing to American Nishesh Basavareddy in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The 19-year-old, seeded fourth, fought hard but ultimately fell 3-4(4), 4-2, 4-2, 4-1 in a gripping match on Thursday.

Shang started the match strongly, clinching the first set 4-3 after a tense tie-break. His powerful serves and agile movements put pressure on Basavareddy, showing promise for a turnaround after his initial loss to France’s Luca Van Assche in the Red Group opener.

However, Basavareddy, ranked World No. 138, rallied in the second set. The American adjusted his strategy, showcasing remarkable resilience to take the next three sets. His triumph over Shang not only marked his first career ATP Tour win but also kept his hopes alive for a semi-final spot in the tournament.
