Liverpool Triumphs Over Manchester City 2-0 to Extend Premier League Lead

Liverpool soared to a commanding 2-0 victory over Manchester City on Sunday, bolstering their lead at the top of the Premier League to nine points. Goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah sealed the win at Anfield, while Manchester City’s struggles continue with a seven-game winless streak.

The match marked Manchester City’s first four-game losing streak in the Premier League since 2008, dropping them to fifth place, 11 points behind their fiercest rivals.

Riding the momentum from a midweek UEFA Champions League triumph over Real Madrid, Liverpool dominated early on. The Reds threatened to secure the game by halftime, with Virgil van Dijk hitting the woodwork and several close attempts from the attacking lineup.

The breakthrough came in the 12th minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a sublime long pass to Mohamed Salah on the right wing. Salah’s low cross bypassed Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, allowing Gakpo to tap in at the back post.

Salah doubled the lead in the 78th minute with a calmly taken penalty after Luis Diaz was fouled in the box by Ortega, sending the home crowd into raptures.

“It’s very special and I don’t take it for granted. It’s always special to score at Anfield and win games,” Salah remarked, amid speculation over his contract renewal.

The victory marks manager Arne Slot’s impressive start at Liverpool, securing 18 wins in 20 games. Slot has instilled defensive solidity and midfield control, complementing the team’s dynamic attacking prowess.

Liverpool now sits atop the Premier League with 34 points from 13 games, nine points clear of both Arsenal and Chelsea. Their flawless start in Europe sees them leading their Champions League group as well.

Throughout the match, Liverpool showcased relentless pressing and attacking flair, recording 18 shots with seven on target. In contrast, Manchester City managed only two shots on target from eight attempts, appearing uncharacteristically disjointed.

Manchester City’s best opportunity came from Rico Lewis, who stabbed wide, while star striker Erling Haaland was kept quiet by Liverpool’s steadfast defense.
