Manchester United staged a thrilling comeback to defeat Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt 3-2 in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, marking the first victory under new manager Ruben Amorim.
The Red Devils took an early lead within the first minute when a defensive error from Bodo/Glimt’s goalkeeper, Nikita Haikin, allowed Rasmus Hojlund to pressure a back pass, resulting in Alejandro Garnacho tapping in from close range.
Bodo/Glimt responded fiercely, capitalizing on quick counter-attacks. In the 19th minute, Hakon Evjen unleashed a stunning strike into the top corner, leveling the score. Just moments later, Philip Zinckernagel outmuscled Tyrell Malacia and slotted the ball past United’s keeper, Andre Onana, sending shockwaves through Old Trafford.
Undeterred, Manchester United equalized before halftime. Noussair Mazraoui’s incisive pass found Hojlund inside the box, who skillfully controlled the ball and fired a shot between two defenders into the far corner.
The momentum continued for United as they took the lead five minutes into the second half. Manuel Ugarte’s low cross was deftly guided into the net by Hojlund, securing his second goal of the match shortly after Mason Mount rattled the crossbar.
Despite relentless efforts, United couldn’t extend their lead and relied on two crucial saves from Onana to maintain their advantage. The victory lifts Manchester United to 12th in the standings with nine points, while Bodo/Glimt falls to 17th with seven.
“Of course, I see what everybody sees—good moments, difficult moments,” Amorim told TNT Sports post-match. “There was some confusion in the end trying to hold the result, but the lads did a great job. They ran, they pressed, they tried to do the things we have worked on in the last three days, and we won.”
Reflecting on his reception at Old Trafford, Amorim added, “Half of the stadium doesn’t know me; I came from Portugal, and I did nothing for this club. Yet the way they make me feel at home is special. I will keep this to the end of my career.”
Amorim’s debut match resulted in a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town on November 24, but this victory signals a promising start to his tenure at Manchester United.
