Manchester United have officially announced the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the club’s new head coach. The 39-year-old Portuguese tactician joins the Red Devils after United triggered a 10-million-euro release clause in his contract with Sporting CP.
Amorim has signed a contract with United that runs until June 2027, with an option to extend for an additional year. He is set to take charge on November 11, following Sporting CP’s final three matches before the international break.
During his tenure at Sporting CP, which began in March 2020, Amorim led the team to significant success, securing two Primeira Liga titles, two Taca da Liga championships, and one Supertaca Cândido de Oliveira trophy. Under his guidance, Sporting CP won 163 of their 229 games, marking a remarkable period in the club’s history.
“Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football,” Manchester United stated. “Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.”
In the interim, Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to lead United until Amorim’s arrival. The former United striker stepped in following the departure of Erik ten Hag, who was relieved of his duties after a 2-1 defeat at West Ham on October 27—the team’s fourth loss in nine Premier League matches at the start of the 2024-25 season.
Ten Hag, appointed in April 2022, guided United to a third-place finish in the 2022-23 Premier League season and an eighth-place finish in 2023-24—the club’s lowest in the Premier League era—despite winning the EFL Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup earlier this year.
In an open letter released through his agency SEG Football, Ten Hag expressed his gratitude: “I wish all Manchester United fans nothing but success, trophies, and glory. Your support and the warmth I received from everyone at the club helped me feel at home. Thank you for this chapter in my life.”
