Zheng Qinwen Defeats Fernandez to Reach Pan Pacific Open Semifinals

China’s Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen showcased her resilience at the WTA Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, overcoming a spirited challenge from Canada’s Leylah Fernandez to secure a spot in the semifinals. Zheng triumphed in a thrilling three-set encounter, winning 6-0, 1-6, 6-3.

Zheng started the match dominantly, racing to a 4-0 lead in the first set. Displaying powerful serves and precise shots, she sealed the set with an ace, bagelling Fernandez 6-0.

However, the momentum shifted in the second set as Fernandez found her footing. The Canadian, a former US Open finalist, responded assertively by winning six consecutive games, taking the set 6-1 and leveling the match.

Entering the decisive third set, Zheng regained her composure. Despite Fernandez fending off an early break point, Zheng surged ahead to a 3-0 lead. Demonstrating her championship pedigree, she closed out the match with a big serve, winning the set 6-3.

This victory marks the second time this month that Zheng has defeated Fernandez, following a previous win at the Wuhan Open two weeks ago. Notably, Fernandez had won their first two encounters, including one earlier this year at the Qatar Open.

Zheng Qinwen will next face Russia’s Diana Shnaider for a place in the final, as she continues her quest for the Pan Pacific Open title.

Zheng’s performance underscores her rising prominence in the world of tennis, as she balances power and finesse on the court. Fans eagerly anticipate her semifinal matchup, hopeful for another display of exceptional skill and determination.
