China Drawn with Germany and Brazil in United Cup 2025 Group Stage

China has been drawn into Group E alongside defending champions Germany and Brazil for the 2025 United Cup, according to the draw results announced on Monday.

The Chinese team will feature top players including Zhang Zhizhen, Bai Yan, and Sun Fajing for the men’s matches, while Zheng Qinwen, Gao Xinyu, and Zhang Shuai will represent in the women’s competitions. Germany’s lineup is highlighted by world No. 3 Alexander Zverev and Laura Siegemund. Brazil will be led by Beatriz Haddad Maia and Thiago Monteiro among others.

Exciting matchups await as Zhang Zhizhen is set to face Alexander Zverev. In their most recent encounter at the Hamburg Open in July, Zverev secured a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Zhang. Zhang also has history with Monteiro, having defeated the Brazilian 7-6(4), 6-3 at the Italian Open in May. On the women’s side, Zheng Qinwen will take on Beatriz Haddad Maia. The two last met at the WTA Elite Trophy in October 2023, where Maia edged out Zheng with a tight 7-6(11), 7-6(4) win. Zheng and Laura Siegemund have yet to play against each other.

Group E matches will be held in Perth, Australia. Perth will also host Group A, comprising the USA, Canada, and a combined team, and Group C, featuring Greece, Kazakhstan, and Spain.

The remaining nine teams will compete in Sydney, divided into three groups. Group B includes Poland, the Czech Republic, and Norway; Group D consists of Italy, France, and Switzerland; and Group F features Britain, Australia, and another combined team. The rosters for the two combined teams are expected to be confirmed in November.

Two-time Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming matches in Sydney. “To play in Sydney is pretty exciting for Alex [de Minaur], he loves playing on Ken Rosewall Arena,” Hewitt said. “We know how well he plays out there, so it’s a good opportunity. Hopefully he can push deep, get as many matches as possible through the United Cup, and give himself the best preparation for the Australian Open.”
