The Beikong Royal Fighters secured a commanding 111-99 victory over the Sichuan Blue Whales on Saturday in Chengdu, extending the home team’s losing streak to four games since the start of the 2024-25 Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) season.
Jared Sullinger led the charge for Beijing, delivering a stellar double-double performance with 32 points and 23 rebounds. Despite committing eight turnovers, Sullinger’s dominance on the court was undeniable. Teammates Zhang Fan and Grant Riller added significant firepower, each contributing 25 points to bolster the visitors’ offense.
Liao Sanning returned to Beijing’s starting lineup and rewarded coach Min Lulei’s confidence by tallying 17 points and dishing out 14 assists with only three turnovers. Although Shen Zijie faced foul trouble limiting him to 28 minutes, he made his presence felt with five crucial blocks for Beijing.
By the end of the third quarter, Beijing had built a substantial 91-72 lead, at one point leading by as many as 19 points. However, the Sichuan Blue Whales mounted a spirited comeback in the fourth quarter, fueled by Zuo Zhenian who drilled four three-pointers. Marcus Hunter and Hu Junlin contributed to the rally with key shots from beyond the arc, narrowing the deficit to eight points, 107-99, with just over a minute and a half remaining.
In the critical final moments, Shen Zijie stepped up for Beijing, securing a pivotal offensive rebound and blocking a layup attempt from Hunter. His defensive prowess helped the Royal Fighters regain composure and seal the victory.
The loss leaves the Sichuan Blue Whales winless in 16th place. Joining them in seeking their first win of the season are the Shanghai Sharks, Jiangsu Dragons, Fujian Sturgeons, and Guangzhou Loong Lions.
