Novak Djokovic Advances to Shanghai Masters Quarterfinals, Nears 100th ATP Title
Novak Djokovic has made history by becoming the first player to reach ten quarterfinals at the Shanghai Masters. On Wednesday, the 37-year-old Serbian defeated Roman Safiullin in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, showcasing his exceptional form and moving closer to claiming his 100th ATP tour-level title.
Djokovic, a four-time champion in Shanghai, began the match with explosive energy, dazzling the crowd with a perfectly executed drop shot near the net. He maintained momentum throughout the first set, sealing it with a powerful ace.
In the second set, Djokovic continued to dominate, maintaining control over Safiullin. He secured victory when Safiullin’s return went out of bounds on match point. This win marks Djokovic’s 37th victory at the tournament, further extending his own record.
Reflecting on his performance, Djokovic expressed satisfaction with his current form. “Very close to ten out of ten,” he said. “Both last night’s match and tonight have been maybe some of the best matches I’ve played in a while. I’m just enjoying myself on the court. When you play well and feel good, there’s a lot of joy in striking a tennis ball. These kinds of matches and sensations are some of the greatest reasons why I still keep on playing and competing.”
He also praised the atmosphere and support from fans. “The Chinese fans are incredible. Such passion and devotion to their favorite players. This tournament has over the years been remarkable,” Djokovic added.
Djokovic has yet to drop a set in Shanghai and will next face Czech teenager Jakub Mensik for a place in the semifinals.
