Zheng Qinwen Reflects on Olympic Gold and Eyes Wuhan Open Success

Chinese tennis sensation Zheng Qinwen, fresh from her historic women's singles gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, has advanced to the last 16 of the Wuhan Open. The 22-year-old secured a straight-sets victory over wild card Jaqueline Cristian on Wednesday in Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province.

Celebrating her birthday just a day earlier, Zheng spoke with CGTN Sports Scene about her expectations for the Wuhan Open and how she is handling the increased attention from media and fans following her Olympic triumph.

\"My expectation in the Wuhan Open is to give my best in every single match,\" Zheng told Sports Scene's Shen Xiang. \"Of course, I would like to progress as far as I can so people can watch me more on the tennis court. But there's no pressure because I just want to keep myself playing with a calm mindset and focus on each day.\"

Zheng shared that she limits her use of social media to stay focused. \"I'm trying to use less social media and keep myself in the real world instead of on the internet,\" she said.

While she appreciates the support after winning the Olympic gold, Zheng is mindful of the responsibilities that come with it. \"It's tough to control winning or losing. You can only do what you can on that day,\" she reflected.

As an inspiration to aspiring athletes, Zheng offered advice to the next generation. \"When you enjoy the sport, you will give more energy and have more passion, which means you're going to put more effort into training, your diet, and fitness. It's not easy to do that 365 days a year. It's easy to do it for a week, maybe, but if you want to reach a high level, you need to remain disciplined,\" she emphasized.

With her maturity and dedication, Zheng Qinwen continues to impress both on and off the court as she sets her sights on further success at the Wuhan Open.
