Chinese snooker player Xiao Guodong delivered a stunning performance at the Wuhan Open on Tuesday, defeating world No.2 and world champion Kyren Wilson of England 5-4 to advance to the round of 16.
Despite Wilson's early dominance, with two 63 breaks securing a 2-0 lead, Xiao remained resilient. He clinched the third frame on the black after requiring snookers and leveled the match by taking the fourth frame, bringing the score to 2-2.
Xiao's momentum continued as he captured the next two frames, pulling ahead 4-2. However, Wilson showcased his champion pedigree, rallying with impressive century breaks of 118 and 108 to tie the match at 4-4.
In a thrilling decider, Xiao held his nerve to secure a 61-44 victory, sealing his place in the next round. \"Kyren is ranked No.2 in the world and became world champion this year, so I kept a clear head and reminded myself to be patient for my chances,\" Xiao reflected. \"Whether I was leading or trailing, I couldn't let my guard down. When I compete in China, I really want to win. Having fans and my family in the audience makes me want to play at my best. Thankfully, I managed to get the result today.\"
Xiao will face England's Barry Hawkins in the round of 16.
In other matches, home favorite Ding Junhui triumphed over compatriot Yuan Sijun with a 5-2 victory, not only advancing to the next round but also avenging his loss to Yuan at last year's tournament.
After an initial 1-1 tie, Ding surged ahead with breaks of 95 and 110 to lead 3-1. Yuan responded with a break of 82 in the fifth frame and kept the sixth frame tightly contested at 50-50. However, Ding's experience shone through as he clinched the final two frames to secure the win.
\"Chinese players are improving their technical skills and gaining more experience; they are getting better,\" Ding commented on the rising talent. \"They have become familiar with the different styles of players, and Chinese competitors stand out in various events now.\" Ding is set to play Chris Wakelin of England in the next round.
