American tennis star Taylor Fritz overcame a resilient Terence Atmane of France, securing a hard-fought 7-6(4), 7-6(5) victory at the Shanghai Masters on Monday. The match, which resumed after a rain delay, showcased thrilling rallies and tenacious play from both competitors.
The clash in Shanghai resumed with Fritz leading 4-3 on serve, following the rain interruption on Saturday. The American swiftly gained momentum, clinching the first set through a tiebreak. In the second set, Fritz extended his lead to 4-2, seemingly on the path to a routine win. However, Atmane displayed remarkable determination, battling back to force another tiebreak.
Fritz acknowledged the challenge posed by his opponent, saying, “I think his ability to basically hit a winner from anywhere on the court made it very tough. Sometimes I almost felt like if I wanted to be the aggressor in the rally, I had to go on when I didn’t want to go on.”
The victory propels Fritz into the next round of the Shanghai Masters, as he continues his pursuit of the title in the prestigious tournament held in east China’s Shanghai Municipality.
