In a tense Madrid derby that was marred by fan disruptions, Atletico Madrid secured a dramatic 1-1 draw against Real Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium. Ángel Correa’s stoppage-time goal, initially ruled offside but awarded after video review, canceled out Éder Militão’s opener for Real Madrid.
The match was interrupted for over 15 minutes in the second half after objects were thrown onto the field by Atletico fans. The incident occurred shortly after Militão celebrated his 64th-minute goal near the sideline in front of Atletico supporters. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also appeared to provoke the home fans, heightening the tensions.
The referee halted the game, sending players to the locker rooms while stadium announcements warned that the match would be suspended if the behavior continued. Atletico defender José María Giménez and midfielder Koke Resurrección appealed to the fans to calm down, while manager Diego Simeone urged for restraint.
“What the fans did wasn’t right, but we are not helping when we provoke them,” Simeone stated. “I’m not justifying what the fans did, but we need to help as well.”
Real Madrid’s coach Carlo Ancelotti remained optimistic despite the draw. “I always think positively,” he said. “We moved closer to the leader and we have been playing well.”
The result leaves Real Madrid in second place in La Liga, three points behind leaders Barcelona, who suffered a 4-2 defeat to Osasuna on Saturday, ending their seven-game winning streak. Atletico Madrid remain third, now just two points behind their city rivals after eight matches.
