In a thrilling finale before an ecstatic home crowd in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, Sichuan Yuanda Meile emerged victorious over Japan’s Fujitsu Red Wave, clinching the inaugural FIBA Women’s Basketball League Asia title with a narrow 73-69 win on Saturday.
The hosts showcased dominance throughout the tournament, having secured wins against Indonesia’s Surabaya Fever and Chinese Taipei’s Cathay Life in their earlier matches. Facing the reigning champions of the Japan Basketball League in the final, Sichuan maintained their momentum from the onset.
Veteran forward Gao Song ignited the game for Sichuan with a swift three-pointer, setting the tone for the intense matchup. The synergy between national team stalwarts Li Meng and Han Xu was on full display as Li delivered a precise assist to Han, propelling the team to a slender lead.
Gao’s sharpshooting continued to trouble the opposition, as she sank another three-pointer that extended Sichuan’s advantage to double digits. The 32-year-old’s experience was pivotal, contributing 18 points, including five three-pointers.
Not to be outdone, center Han Xu demonstrated versatility beyond the paint, nailing a three-pointer in the third quarter that expanded the lead to 20 points. Han dominated both ends of the court, finishing with a game-high 24 points, six rebounds, and two blocks.
Despite the significant deficit, Fujitsu Red Wave rallied in the final quarter. Uchio Akina’s steal and fast-break layup sparked a spirited comeback, narrowing the gap. However, Sichuan’s defense held firm, with Han Xu anchoring the rim protection.
In the closing minutes, Gao Song showcased her resilience. After having a shot blocked, she swiftly recovered to execute a reverse layup, ensuring Sichuan maintained their lead. The hosts withstood the late surge from their opponents to secure the historic victory.
Amid jubilant celebrations, Sichuan Yuanda Meile etched their name in history as the first-ever champions of the FIBA Women’s Basketball League Asia. Han Xu’s outstanding performance earned her the Most Valuable Player honors, capping a remarkable tournament for the team.
“Winning this title at home means a lot to us,” Han Xu commented after the game. “We played with unity and determination throughout the tournament, and we’re proud to bring this honor to Sichuan.”
