China’s Shang Juncheng Defeats Former World No. 4 Nishikori at Chengdu Open

In an impressive display of skill, China’s Shang Juncheng defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-4 at the Chengdu Open in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan Province on Thursday. This victory advances Shang to the next round of the men’s singles competition.

Shang and Nishikori last met earlier in 2023, where Nishikori emerged victorious. Nishikori, who reached a career-high ranking of fourth in the world in March 2015, faced a determined opponent this time. In the first set, Shang secured a crucial break in the third game to lead 2-1. Demonstrating resilience, he saved two break points in the tenth game to claim the set.

The second set proved more challenging as both players held their serves, reaching 4-4 after eight games. Shang broke Nishikori’s serve in the fifth game, but Nishikori immediately responded by breaking back. Undeterred, Shang earned his third break of the match and held firm, saving two break points in his final service game to seal the victory.

“I’m feeling more and more relaxed in the match,” Shang shared with reporters after his win. “I have no pressure playing the tour. I just want to enjoy every match. I’m satisfied as long as I give my best on the court.”

Earlier in the day, home player Zhou Yi celebrated his first Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour win after defeating Chun-Hsin Tseng of Chinese Taipei. Zhou faced a setback in the first set, losing 2-6, but made a strong comeback to take the second set 6-1. Leading 3-1 in the third set, Zhou advanced as Tseng was forced to retire due to injury.

“It’s a very important match in my career,” Zhou remarked. “It’s a recognition of my efforts and a boost to my confidence. I’m happy that I won.”
