Chinese Super League’s Taishan and Shenhua Secure Wins in AFC Champions League Elite Openers

Chinese Super League (CSL) clubs Shandong Taishan and Shanghai Shenhua kicked off their 2024-25 AFC Champions League Elite campaigns with impressive home victories on Tuesday.

In Jinan, located in east China’s Shandong Province, Shandong Taishan secured a 3-1 win against Australia’s Central Coast Mariners. The home side took an early lead when Bi Jinhao headed in a cross from Li Yuanyi in the 8th minute.

Controversy emerged just before halftime when the referee, after blowing the whistle for the interval, consulted the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and awarded a penalty to the Mariners. Mikael Doka converted the spot-kick, leveling the score at 1-1.

Shandong regained the advantage in the 74th minute. Liao Lisheng initiated a swift counterattack, setting up Valeri Qazaishvili, who calmly slotted the ball home to make it 2-1. Qazaishvili sealed the victory for Taishan with his second goal in the 88th minute, ensuring a triumphant start for his team.

Meanwhile, over in Shanghai, Shanghai Shenhua also enjoyed success in their opening match. The home side delighted fans with a solid performance, securing a vital win in their first group stage game.

The victories place both CSL teams in strong positions as they navigate the group stages of Asia’s premier club competition. Fans across the region will be watching closely as Shandong Taishan and Shanghai Shenhua aim to carry their momentum forward in pursuit of continental glory.
