China Media Group (CMG) and Spain’s top football league, La Liga, have announced a new media rights cooperation agreement that will bring the excitement of Spanish football to audiences across the Chinese mainland. The partnership, unveiled on Tuesday, grants CMG the rights to broadcast the 2024-25 La Liga season on all its platforms, including both television and digital channels.
Under the terms of the agreement, CMG will offer comprehensive coverage of La Liga matches, providing fans with unprecedented access to one of Europe’s most prestigious football competitions. In addition to broadcasting rights, the collaboration extends to other areas such as business communication and initiatives to promote youth development in football.
La Liga President Javier Tebas expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are delighted to cooperate with China Media Group to bring the excitement of the Spanish league to Chinese audiences. Through our joint efforts, football will become a bond of friendship and mutual understanding between the people of Spain and China.”
In a September interview with CMG, Tebas highlighted La Liga’s desire to explore further cooperation opportunities, including advancements in broadcasting technologies. “We want to share La Liga’s experience with our Chinese friends to promote the development of the football industry in China,” he said.
Recognizing the time difference between Spain and the Chinese mainland, La Liga has adjusted the kickoff times of several key matches, including the highly anticipated “El Clasico” between Real Madrid and Barcelona. These changes aim to make it more convenient for Chinese fans to watch live matches. Tebas has also expressed his intention to engage in further discussions with CMG to better cater to the needs of fans in China.
This strategic partnership not only signifies a milestone in sports broadcasting but also strengthens the cultural and sporting ties between Spain and the Chinese mainland, fostering greater understanding and collaboration through the universal language of football.
