Australian duo Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson have ended a 27-year wait for an all-Australian team to clinch the U.S. Open men’s doubles title. On Saturday, they triumphed over German pair Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz with a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory in a thrilling final at Flushing Meadows.
After suffering heartbreak at Wimbledon earlier this year, where they failed to convert three match points in the final, Purcell and Thompson were determined not to let history repeat itself. “Grand Slam champion—that’s got a great ring to it, especially after the heartbreak at Wimbledon,” Thompson said during the trophy presentation. “It got a little bit tense there at the end with match points. I thought ‘I can’t do it again’ but we stuck with it and we got there.”
The seventh-seeded Australians displayed resilience throughout the tournament, notably in the second round where they saved two match points. In the final, they secured an early break in the first set to lead 3-2 and held serve to take the set after battling back from 15-40 down in the final game.
The second set saw the Aussies once again break for a 3-2 lead. However, the German tenth seeds mounted a comeback, saving two championship points in the ninth game and breaking Purcell and Thompson at love in the next. Undeterred, the Australians pushed the set to a tense tiebreak. Despite trailing 1-3, they rallied to clinch the tiebreak 7-4, sealing their victory on the third championship point.
This victory marks Purcell’s second Grand Slam doubles title, having won Wimbledon in 2022 alongside compatriot Matthew Ebden. For Thompson, it’s his first Grand Slam title. Their win harks back to the success of legendary Australian pair Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde, who last won the U.S. Open men’s doubles title in 1996.
Purcell and Thompson’s triumph not only cements their place in Australian tennis history but also showcases the enduring strength of Australian doubles players on the international stage.
