Bayern Munich secured a commanding 2-0 victory over Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, with goals from Harry Kane and club legend Thomas Müller.
Kane opened the scoring by converting a penalty, marking his first Bundesliga goal of the season. The English forward won the spot-kick after his header struck the outstretched arm of Freiburg defender Max Rosenfelder. Initially overlooked by the referee, the penalty was awarded following a VAR review.
Müller, making his record-breaking 710th appearance for Bayern Munich, sealed the victory with a remarkable goal in the 78th minute. Having replaced new signing Michael Olise in the 59th minute, Müller showcased his deft touch by controlling a cross from Serge Gnabry, sidestepping Maximilian Eggestein, and firing past goalkeeper Florian Müller.
“Records aren’t so important for me, to be honest,” Müller told DAZN. “Instead, it’s that I scored a really beautiful goal. Outstanding technique and then it goes in too, that’s what’s fun for me.”
The goal marked Müller’s 150th in his Bundesliga career and extended his streak of scoring in 16 consecutive top-tier seasons since the 2009-10 campaign. The 34-year-old forward continues to etch his name in the club’s history books, having recently surpassed goalkeeping great Sepp Maier for the most appearances for Bayern.
The match also featured tense moments late on, as new Bayern signing Joao Palhinha conceded a penalty for handball deep into added time. However, Freiburg’s Lucas Höler failed to capitalize, sending his shot over the bar and preserving a clean sheet for Bayern in Vincent Kompany’s first home game as coach.
Bayern Munich is now one of three Bundesliga teams to win both of their opening games this season, alongside Heidenheim and Leipzig, the latter having ended champion Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s 15-month unbeaten league run on Saturday.
