Croatia’s track and field Paralympic team is gearing up for the Paris Games with a dynamic mix of seasoned athletes and rising stars. With high hopes and rigorous preparation, the team aims to bring home a significant number of medals.
Among the top medal contenders is Ivan Katanusic, a leading figure in Croatian Paralympic sports. At 33 years old, Katanusic has become known for his powerful throws and competitive spirit. When he steps into the throwing circle, he views the discus as both a friend and an enemy.
“When I have the discus in my hand, I see him as an enemy, so I just throw far,” Katanusic said.
Katanusic’s impressive track record includes a silver medal in the discus event at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, as well as multiple medals at the World Para Athletics and European Championships. He believes that Croatia’s combination of experienced athletes and new talents will be a significant advantage in Paris.
“I hope we, as Paralympians, can win a minimum of seven medals,” he stated confidently.
Born with a limb deficiency that led to the amputation of his leg shortly after birth, Katanusic learned to walk with a prosthesis at just 13 months old. His determination and resilience propelled him to compete alongside non-disabled athletes early in his career.
“I have to thank my mother and my father because they never looked at me as a disabled person,” Katanusic shared.
The Croatian team’s spirit and commitment exemplify the country’s dedication to Paralympic sports. As the Paris Games approach, supporters eagerly anticipate the athletes’ performances and hope to see them achieve their goals on the international stage.
